| If you like Akira, then you'll like Ghost in the Shell, too. It also transcends the anime genre and is a mind-trip with awesome visuals. And if that controversial, psychological crazy stuff is what you like, then I'd recommend Neon Genesis Evangelion, too. Otherwise, ignore it, as it's not really on the same level as the others in quality. Battle Royale is pretty classic. If you are interested in Japanese films at all, then see it. Anything by Akira Kurosawa will be good, too. He's made a ton of films, many of them samurai films. Rashomon is old but dope. Kagemusha is also rad -- it's about a body double for a Japanese lord who takes over the guy's identity after he dies. (And it's not the same guy, but if you like those, then see Zatoichi, too.) I'm not big into anime, but Hayao Miyazaki is a big name in Japanese film. (He did Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, etc.) Those are cool, but watch Grave of the Fireflies. Most depressing thing ever, but also amazing. If you ever hear of a movie called 20th Century Boys in English, then RUN (don't walk) and go get it! It's about some guys who make a plan for world domination as students, and then many years later, things begin mysteriously happening for real... so awesome. You've probably heard of more recent Japanese horror films like The Grudge and The Ring. But as a general rule, the 80s and 90s were a great time for Japanese film. | What is a good series to help introduce my mom to anime? My mother is driving me insane. She does not understand why i like anime and her comments are starting to get annoying.
